How to tell if you need to replace your boiler
There are a number of things to look for which may indicate that you need a replacement boiler:
- How old is it? If it’s 5 - 10 years old then it’s unlikely to be a condensing boiler, so it’s almost certainly less efficient than a modern boiler. If it’s 10 years old or more then it could be operating at as little as 60% efficiency and be at higher risk of breaking down.
- Is it noisier than it used to be? As parts wear out they tend to make more noise and this can be a good indicator of inefficient operation.
- Do all your radiators work properly or are you getting cold patches? Generally this is a sign of trapped air in the system, which with a modern, efficient system, you would usually avoid.
- Has your heating cost increased out of proportion to the cost of the fuel? This is probably the main indicator of a boiler that needs replacing, as it’s no longer burning fuel as efficiently as it should.
- Are all your rooms at the right temperature? Usually when you are replacing the boiler you would upgrade the control system and this would also increase the efficiency.

Replacing you boiler – some things to consider
- Fuel type – what does your current system run on, and is it right for your household?
- Boiler type – it could be that a combi boiler (combination boiler) or a system boiler is the most suitable. We can advise you on the best solution.
- Boiler efficiency – different boilers and different manufacturers will quote a variety of efficiency levels. We only fit A rated boilers for our customers where possible.
- Boiler manufacturer – we supply boilers from a range of high quality manufacturers including, Baxi, Ideal and Worcester Bosch.
- Heating controls – usually when you replace your boiler, you would also review your heating controls to make sure that you can direct the heat to where you want it.
- Boiler installation – ensure that you use a Gas Safe registered engineer and you will need to plan the replacement to cause the minimum of inconvenience to you and your family.
