A system boiler (or pressurised sealed system) is very much like a regular boiler in that it uses a copper cylinder to heat and store your hot water. A new system boiler provides large quantities of heated water for your central heating radiators and hot water to your taps. It’s a great choice for a larger home or family needing lots of hot water, a need which may not be able to be met by a combi boiler.
There are a few important differences between a system boiler and a conventional boiler:
- All the major components of the heating and hot water system are built into the system boiler itself which means that the installation is quicker and more straightforward than with a traditional boiler.
- Hot water is pumped from the system boiler through the heating system to the radiators and hot water cylinder giving you a fast response and generally very economical running costs.
All system boilers are condensing boilers (condenser boilers) which extract more of the heat from the burnt fuel. Therefore they operate more efficiently than non-condensing boilers and can be more than 90% efficient unlike an older boiler which may be running at only 60% efficiency.

Key features of a system boiler
- Water is fed in directly from the mains, removing the need for a cold water storage tank in your loft. This reduces the space the system boiler takes up in your home.
- Hot water is stored in a cylinder which is usually found in your airing cupboard, until it is needed.
- Because the water is kept hot in the cylinder it can provide a steady source of hot water through any outlet at a continuous pressure. This makes a system boiler suitable for larger homes with larger families.
- A system boiler is relatively compact as all the major components are built into the boiler itself.
- The main limitation of a system boiler is that once you’ve used all the hot water in your storage cylinder you’ll have to wait for it to heat up again.
